In Memory of Ian Mirtle: A Pillar of the Saskatoon Basketball Community

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ian Mirtle, a cherished leader and mentor in the Saskatoon basketball community. Ian's unexpected departure has left a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire and shape the sport in our city and beyond for generations to come.

Ian was more than just a coach; he was a mentor, a friend, and a role model to countless young athletes. His passion for basketball was evident in everything he did, from the countless hours he dedicated to coaching, to the encouragement and guidance he provided both on and off the court. Ian believed in the power of sport to build character, foster teamwork, and bring people together, and he lived these values every day.

As the Executive Director of the Saskatoon Minor Basketball Association (SMBA), Ian's leadership was transformative. Over the span of 20-plus years, he spearheaded the growth of the organization from just a few teams to more than 200 by the time he retired in 2017. His vision and dedication were instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of the sport, ensuring that countless young athletes had the opportunity to experience the joy and discipline that basketball brings. Ian’s commitment to developing young talent and his unwavering support for the sport have left an indelible mark on Saskatoon’s basketball landscape.

Ian's involvement in sports spanned over five decades, during which he wore many hats, including player, coach, and administrator. He began his teaching career in Kinistino before returning to Saskatoon, where he taught at City Park Collegiate and later at Mount Royal Collegiate, where he coached his daughter, Heather, among others. His contributions extended beyond the basketball court, as he was deeply involved in track and field, officiating at provincial and national levels, and serving on various sports committees, including the Jeux Canada Games and the Reebok National tournament.

Ian’s influence extended far beyond the basketball court. He was known for his kindness, his generosity, and his genuine care for others. He had an uncanny ability to connect with people, to understand their needs, and to provide the support they required to reach their full potential. His wisdom, humor, and unwavering positivity were qualities that endeared him to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ian’s dedication to sports was recognized with numerous accolades, including his induction into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and being named Kinsmen Sportsman of the Year in 2016. These honors are a testament to his unwavering commitment to the sports community in Saskatchewan.

As we remember Ian, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he led. His contributions to our community will never be forgotten, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to be touched by his guidance and friendship. Ian will now join his beloved wife, Sharon, in the afterlife, where they will be together once more.

Ian Mirtle's legacy is one of passion, dedication, and a deep love for the game of basketball. He has left a lasting impact on our community, and his memory will forever be a source of inspiration for all of us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ian's family and loved ones during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Rest in peace, Ian.
